How to paint kitchen cabinets professionally?

January 08, 20252 min read

Painting kitchen cabinets is a great way to refresh your kitchen without the expense of a full renovation. However, achieving a professional-quality finish requires the right preparation, tools, and techniques. Follow this step-by-step guide to ensure a flawless cabinet transformation.

Step 1: Gather materials and tools

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • High-quality cabinet paint (acrylic, enamel, or alkyd-based)

  • Primer (if necessary)

  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)

  • Painter’s tape

  • Drop cloths

  • Screwdriver (to remove cabinet doors and hardware)

  • Foam rollers and angled brushes

  • Paint tray

  • Cleaning solution (degreaser)

  • Tack cloth or microfiber cloth

Step 2: Remove cabinet doors and hardware

Use a screwdriver to remove cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware. Label each piece to ensure easy reassembly.

Step 3: Clean the cabinets thoroughly

Grease and dirt can prevent paint from adhering properly. Use a degreasing cleaner to thoroughly clean all surfaces.

Step 4: Sand the surfaces

Lightly sand all cabinet surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper to remove old paint or finish. Wipe away dust with a tack cloth.

Step 5: Apply primer

If your cabinets are dark or have a glossy finish, apply a primer to create a smooth base for the paint. Let it dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 6: Apply the first coat of paint

Using an angled brush for details and a foam roller for flat surfaces, apply a thin, even coat of paint. Allow it to dry fully before proceeding.

Step 7: Lightly sand between coats

For a professional, smooth finish, lightly sand the first coat with 220-grit sandpaper before applying the next layer.

Step 8: Apply the second coat of paint

Apply another thin coat for full coverage and durability. Make sure to use long, even strokes to avoid brush marks.

Step 9: Let cabinets cure completely

Cabinet paint needs ample drying time to fully cure. Wait at least 24-48 hours before handling them and several days before regular use.

Step 10: Reassemble the cabinets

Once the paint is completely dry, reattach cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware.
